A Typical Sunrise At Long Lake Camp For The Arts

Why Long Lake is unlike any camp on earth, Our Campers Are Incredible!

A camper called Sam joined Long Lake (11 year old) who loved to sing and adored musicals. However before Long Lake they had terrible stage fright and never felt confident enough to perform in front of an audience. After 2 weeks of private vocal lessons and singing with their friends, Sam mustered up the courage to perform a solo during one of our Friday Performing Arts night. They chose “Castle on a Cloud” from Les Miserables (their favorite musical).
Friday night came around quickly and for the whole day Sam had knots in their stomach, Their nerves soon got the better of them and they decided they could not do it, so told their vocal coach to take them out of the show. After much encouragement from their coach and friends they changed their mind….
Backstage..Sam’s turn to perform was next, they had been called up on deck ready to perform. The act before ended, the lights went low and with great trepidation they nervously entered the stage with their vocal coach beside them. Their microphone was adjusted, the spotlight burst to life, the audience went silent.
The accompanist began the opening to “Castle on a Cloud”, their vocal coach conducted their start and ….nothing, no sound, not a whisper. Sam froze, clasping their hands tightly together behind their back…the piano restarted and the vocal coach encourage them from the side stage. Again, nothing.. Sam looked panicked and went to run off the stage….
Before they could exit , a camper in the back of the theater stood up and began singing the opening to “Castle on a Cloud”, then another camper and another, then 100 then 200 campers….Sam stopped at the edge of the stage and turned to see and hear the entire audience were on their feet, singing to give them the courage to start.
Sam walked back to the microphone, took a deep breath and started to sing, joining in with the entire camp. As the audience saw they were singing, one by one sat down to listen.
Sam made it to the end of the song with tears streaming down their face and half of the audience faces too. The song ended, there was silence, then deafening applause and a standing ovation. Sam’s bunk mates rushed the stage and the hugged them for what felt like forever. No one who was there that day will ever forget what it is to be loved.

Special moments like these happen all the time at Long Lake. We help campers to discover the highest art: the arts of living!
